Office of the Directorate of Merchant Marine Circular No. 41

Consular and Maritime Affairs

To: Masters of Panamanian Vessels

Subject: Carriage of Solid Bulk Cargoes

Reference: International Maritime Organization – "Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk

Cargoes"

The International Maritime Organization approved by means of Resolution A.434(IX) the "Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk Cargoes."

The Code contains a series of recommendations, additional to the requirements of Chapter VI of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974, for the safe carriage of solid bulk cargoes. Following these recommendations may help to avoid some serious casualties which have occurred in the past.

It is expected that Masters of Panamanian vessels carrying solid bulk cargoes, in keeping with the principles of good seamanship, become familiar with the provisions of the Code, carry one copy on board and follow its recommendations.
