- The Republic of Panama requires compliance as of 25 May 1981 with IMO Resolution A.424(XI), which requires that all existing vessels of 1600 GRT and upwards when engage on International voyages shall be fitted with a gyro compass and must comply with the performance standards for Gyro Compasses stated therein. SOLAS 74/81/83 further indicates that ships of 500 GRT and upwards constructed on or after 1 September 1984 shall be fitted with a gyro compass.
- In the event that an existing vessel encounters serious problems in complying with any aspect of referenced Resolution, a request for exemption or partial exemption must be sent to the Directorate of Consular and Maritime Affairs, New York Representative Office, Republic of Panama, 1180 Avenue of the Americas, 23rd Floor, New York, NY 10036, U.S.A., on a case-by-case basis, for evaluation and possible approval.
